SistersSpinderella

SistersSpinderella is a Go! Push Pops performative sculpture in collaboration with Chilean artist Maria Jose Duran Steinman. Based on various mytho-spiritual lore including Native American matrilineal creation myth and Italian trance dance originating from the Greek rights of Bacchantes,  SistersSpinderella is part sculpture, part ritual, part jig.  The project references the Native American Spider Woman ‘Creator/Grandmother of the Sun’ Goddess and the correlate work of the 1970s feminist Spider Woman Theater Collective, a leading voice for indigenous women and Feminist Art. SistersSpinderella also incorporates elements of the healing trance dance known as Tarantella, a modern conception of the Baccantian dance Pizzica Tarantata (“the bite of the spider tarantula” also called “bite of love”) where the wild women followers of Bacchantes, Roman God of intoxication, become abandoned to their physical natures, literally spinning and stomping their way free of repressed sexual energy.

For this project, The Push Pops will collaborate with Maria Jose Duran Steinman, an artist whose textile based sculptures and site-specific installations pose libidinal experiences with the material and its cycles of transformation.

Maria Jose Duran Steinman, b. 1982 in Chile, received BFA Fine Arts at Finis Terrae University in 2006. In 2008 she was awarded with the Fulbright Scholarship and the Chilean international Scholarship to pursuit graduate studies in NYC.

In 2010 she received her MFA Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts as well as the Alumni Scholarship award. Duran-Steinman has exhibited in Chile and New York; more recently in Perry Rubenstein Gallery, Cuchifritos Gallery, Galeria Artespacio and a solo show in NY in 2011 at the Governor’s Island Art Fair. She worked as personal assistant to Lynda Benglis during 2010 and 2011. Currently she is preparing “El Descubrimiento de America/ The Discovery of the Americas”, upcoming three-person show at Local Project in LIC for October 2012.

Go! Push Pops is proud to announce an exciting new performance work in collaboration with the AMAZING sculptor Matt Stone during the POWERPLAY Sculpture Park Opening in the Hamptons this Saturday. The piece, titled Xithinix Pangea adopts Stone’s sculpture as a type of  neo-tribal ‘totem’ within a constructed psychic terrain at once primal and galactic futurist. The performance will conclude with a music set by the thrash core ensemble Prayer Town.

On July 14th, 2012 POWERPLAY activates the 13-acre facility of the Hayground School in Bridgehampton, Long Island featuring over 25 emerging and established artists from the East End and New York City. The participatory-based programming highlights sculpture, installation, performance, sound and video.

POWERPLAY is a sculpture of experiences curated by Molly Morgan Weiss and The City Firm. POWERPLAY invites the viewer to question the value system of power and how it is interpreted within the American psyche. The exhibition confronts the dualities between natural and man made energy, as well as being a part of a global community versus an ethnocentric one. The themes explored are alternative energy, science, space exploration, food, holistic practices, technology, spirituality, sexuality, wealth, beauty,  ritual and human interaction.  A printed map of the 13-acre experience will be provided upon entrance.

   

                                                    

PUSH PORN: A LESBIAN GANGSTA EROTICA BY THE PUSH POP COLLECTIVE

For Bushwick Open Studios (BOS) 2012, Go! Push Pops premiered their lesbian-gangsta-erotica ‘Push Porn’ on 2 screens at Homero’s Barbershop, a local business where they filmed a segment of the video with their stylist Ecua. Starring local hustla celeb “Strawberry,” Push Porn is a nastay lucid dream about drugs, popsicles and gentrification at the frontier of the avant-ghetto. The opening party and world premier of the ‘Push Porn’ included scalp design specials by Ecua the official Push Pop barber, free limited edition posters, bootleg porn & beer.

Go! Push Pops "Push Pole" is contemporary revisioning of the European ‘May Pole’ Folk Ritual. Attributed with many meanings including a symbol of the world axis (axis mundi), reverence for sacred trees and early Modern phallic symbolism, Push Pole is a fluxus style ‘happening’ in collaboration with the artist Milena Shakujō who has developed an experimental soundscape to accompany the performance.

 

Go! Push Pops Push Pole is part of ‘The Standard for Spring,’ a nomadic performance festival in the Chelsea Arts district (High Line) curated by Tara Raye Russo.

Magic Banner, a Push Pop Collaboration with artist Ivy Castellanos, took place at the IV Soldier Gallery in Bushwick, Brooklyn on March 16, 2012. Led by Castellanos as The Conductor, a ‘violent sculpture’ on stilts with a cloak of dried paint in the likeness of the American flag; the Push Pops, now a pregnant gay hood couple, sang a bilingual National Anthem against the backdrop of Magic Johnson’s 1991 press conference in which he announced that he was H.I.V. positive and would serve as a spokesperson for the disease. Magic Banner is a public proclamation calling for a new national horizon supported by conscious and humble leadership toward a greater good.
